How different finishes can modernize furniture

When making a farmhouse table, there are several design issues that have to be taken into account. The first issue is whether to make traditional turned legs or go for the more modern shaker style. It may not sound like much of a conundrum but it is a very important choice when people come to purchase a table.

The more modern shaker style legs are from a Scandinavian background. Hand in hand with this style goes the painting of the table. Hand painted and in modern colors transforms a ordinary object, into a stylish piece for one’s home. Colors available from specialist paint makers tend to be of the Victorian colors, but surprisingly these can look lovely and modern.

The surprise has been the use of green. Green as a color may seem an unorthodox choice, but it is the shades of blues mixed with greens that are very popular. A duck egg, teal or sage seems to be the colors of choice in today’s society. These colors transform boring items into something very modern.

Turned legs by contrast are the traditional look, everyone knows and expects it, the old kitchen table, that grandma had always had turned legs. The rest of the kitchen furniture matched it, the chairs were spindle, or slat back, maybe even fiddle back, all with nice turned legs.

Shaker tables, however, need a shaker chair. A chair with a high back looks in keeping and the Breton or Amish style chairs tend to match the best with the table. When the chair is painted these tend to look like a stylish centerpiece in one’s home. Different shades of blues make the chairs stand out and make it a lovely set.

Different trends do tend to come and go. One finish that never goes out of fashion is wax. It is a timeless effect and will always be popular. For a complete look go for a welsh dresser. These can either have straight sides to match shaker sets of routered out sides to match a traditional sets. Popular with both the modern shaker style or traditional turned style seems to be blues. The use of colors in furniture seems to be a trend that is set to continue.
