Local Businesses Should Not Overlook Online Marketing

Online marketing is nothing new; big companies have been using it for years to boost their image and sales. However, small businesses targeting a local market are just now learning the power of Internet marketing and learning how this resource cannot be overlooked.

Many small business are, perhaps, a bit behind in understanding the power of the Internet, but they are quickly catching on. Unfortunately, although small business owners may want to take advantage of this great resource, their knowledge of online marketing and SEO may be abysmal. If you are new to Internet marketing and want your customers to be able to find you quickly with a locally-directed search, there are some things you should do.

* Website. Of course, your business needs a website, and you may already have one. But is it helping customers to find you? Search engines like websites that have good content, not that just look pretty. That means you have to have text in your website with keywords your customers will type in when looking for your business. Search engines can’t “read” graphics, so make certain your website is text and keyword rich.

* Increase you content online. Search engines help customers find you by ranking your site against others. The more content you have online, the better for your SEO (search engine optimization). Start a blog, announce sales, publish online articles, etc.

* Don’t overlook local marketing opportunities. Most small businesses understand offline marketing, but are not so savvy about online marketing. Start Facebook and Twitter accounts and urge customers to friend you and follow you. Join local forums and make certain your business is listed on your local chamber of commerce’s site. If the chamber has an online newsletter, participate in it.

* Build an e-mail list. Every time someone makes a purchase, try to get their e-mail. Many people will balk-we all get enough e-mails, thank you very much. However, make certain you give them an incentive, such as private sales or discounts to e-mail customers. Then they’ll be more likely to hand out their e-mail.

Creating an Internet marketing campaign is vital in this fast-moving and competitive world if you want your business to succeed.
