The Snowfall Is Giving Fishermen The Time To Get Out And Find Fresh Places

Here we go again with another let off for the nation’s maggots which are currently being spared a freezing drowning as maggot drowners boycott the water, even if it isn’t frozen over. I’ve often wondered what happens at the fishing tackle shop at times like these when the growth of bait must eventually get critical, as must the odour. Naturally nobody is going to get their bait and tackle out unless they are a) certifiable b) foolhardy or c) being paid immense amounts of money to do so. And besides, even if any of those scenarios were true, the possibility of any fish feeding in these conditions is extremely remove.

The snow might mean that instead of going out into the country with bait and tackle, that people get the serious outdoor clothing on and carry the camera instead and make the most of the wonderful scenes because despite the annoyance to travel, once you get past that it is fantastic out there. Anywhere that has a tree will look like it should be on a picture postcard. However, there is a downside, because the amount of the snow has caused the buddleia on my drive to snap which is very maddening.

I reckon that the only shopping being done at the fishing tackle shop this week will be for people shopping for presents for piscatorial friends and relatives so that is most likely the best bit of what at any other time of the year would mean bleak trading indeed. If it was me and it was not Christmas week, I’d either be remaining at home or donning some sturdy boots, getting the camera and my little chap and sallying out into the Black Country hills.

Another advantage of going out into the countryside of course is that there is always the chance of discovering a new spot to fish, perhaps a pond or lake that had previously slipped the notice or a arm of a river that could offer a fun day’s sport. We don’t have many rivers in the immediate district near here, though the Severn Valley is half an hour away, but there are many canals and a walk along the towpath could be worthwhile if a spot can be uncovered to take the bait and tackle in more temperate times.

We are being informed that this cold snap is odd but is it? This is what the winter was what we expected it to be like when I was a youngster, though not usually in the countdown to xmas, but it was normal to get it in January and February and these were the periods when days out with bait and tackle were out of the question, and with the end of the season looming anyway, from December to June I would very rarely bother to go angling and find something different, preferably warmer, to do instead. And this is what we should be doing; work off the fat gathered over the xmas period, get out and find somewhere new to go when tackle dangling becomes possible again.
