Although used daily and discussed frequently, one might wonder what exactly Civil Law is. To put it simply, it’s a large–or short–collection of of laws. It’s a legal system that was inspired by the long ago Golden Age of the ancient Romans, whose contributions to matters of justice have been paralleled perhaps only to that of the Greeks.

However, it was the ancient kingdom of Babylon that originally used the method of codification, a characteristic of Civil Law that has come to define it apart from the rest.
Codifying the laws of a nation, city or county is merely putting it into a classified order. To list them logically, numbered, and so on. However, the main purpose of civil laws are to provide the public with access to its regulations that pertain to and govern them. In this way, it is more difficult for someone to be arrested without a cause, because even the smallest of men have an understanding of the system of justice that reigns over him.
The Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, Justinian the First, was the first to implement a type of real civil code. During the years 529 until around 534, he collected and assisted in the creation of a system of justice that would be drastically different from all of the other systems then present on the earth. This is was called the Justinian Code, or the Law of Justinian. The laws dealt primarily with matters of jurisprudence.
It came to be that Emperor Justinian commissioned his Tribonian, or royal court official, to oversee the project that he had put in place. The Tribonian and his team worked on the collection, editing or introducing new aspects to the body. When the work was finished, they distributed it throughout the entire kingdom in Latin. It was fundamental, to say the least. Now all levels of class, whether servant or Lord, had access to reading and understanding the laws of the land.
The greatest and main goal of this system is to provide every level of citizenry with access to the rules and regulations of justice in the land, most of all the rules that pertain to himself, personally. It’s a collection of codified regulations. It’s also unique in that the laws are not secret, only available for the government to either create, hide or destroy.
Immigration to the Western world was triggered due to religious persecution in Europe. When thousands fled to North America to seek a safe haven, they brought many of their European aspects and ideas of culture with them. This would impact their laws in a great way. Later, as colonial expansion pushed westward, these ideas were carried across the new country. They helped to shape the then young United States of America, as their legal system was then being molded.
